Julie Preston has been practicing yoga for over 20 years, and teaching since 2007 with over 10000 hours of teaching experience to students ranging from 3 to 98 years old! She is an RYT & Yoga Alliance 200 & 500 hour senior qualified teacher.
Julie was born, and grew up, in Belfast, but spent many years working, living and adventuring in other countries until settling back here in 2007 to co-create Yogabelfast with Chandra Mauli.
Julie's deep love and respect of Yoga as a way of life and state of being, not just a physical practice, shines through in all her classes, making the practices accessible to all. Her skills as a teacher lie in combining her ongoing personal studentship with creativity, compassion and encouragement, to share authentic accessible classes that welcome you to show up just as you are, and to embrace life fully with greater joy, balance and peace, so that the yoga experience extends far beyond the mat.
Julie had her first taste of yoga back in 1997 when her life had hit a cross-roads, and her health and well-being were at an all time low. During that class she remembers so clearly that short but sweet taste of inner peace, a quietness on the inside which she'd never experienced before. It was love at first yoga, and since then Julie's yoga journey and ongoing studies have taken her all around the world, inspired by many styles and teachers, but always bring her back to her own sacred time on her trusty yoga mat.
The many ways in which yoga had helped to shift and transform Julie's life, inspired her to follow her heart to become a yoga teacher. In 2006 she said goodbye to her high-flying London career life, and took off on an incredible journey of learning and self-discovery via Europe, USA, Canada and finally India where she immersed herself in living a yogic life at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala and, whilst there, gained her first hatha yoga teacher training certificate. Since then she as gone on to gain her advanced teaching 500 hour certificate in Hatha Yoga, 200 hour certification in Vinyasa Flow, and specialised qualifications in children's yoga, pregnancy yoga, chair-based yoga, and ayurvedic yoga therapy, nutrition and cookery. She loves practicing and studying many forms of yoga, and is deeply grateful to all her teachers and students over the years who have helped inspire her learning and growth so that she can share it with others. Julie spent her childhood studying classical music, gaining her honours degree in music, and she now combines this background with her love of Kirtan (a call and response form of chanting healing powerful mantras with music) leading kirtan events with her husband, Victor Tyrrell (bioenergybelfast.com). It is with deepest gratitude that she honours her kirtan teacher and mentor, Jai Uttal (jaiuttal.com), in giving her the support and encouragement to follow her heart in bringing kirtan to Belfast since 2011.
Chandra has been studying, practising and teaching Yoga for more than 40 years. He lived alongside his teacher Swami Vishnu Devananda, a world authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga and one of the most influential figures in the transmission of yoga to the West and who is author of The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and Meditation and Mantras. Chandra spent many years teaching under Swami Vishnu's guidance teaching many years in London, and director of yoga centres in New York and Toronto. His emphasis is to teach yoga as a traditional, practical, and perennial philosophy. He loves all the aspects of yoga - all of it, asanas, kriyas, pranayama, sanskrit, philosophy, chanting, meditation and will do his best to share those with you.
